Ants can be quite frustrating and annoying when they enter our house, picnic or anywhere else. However various facts about ants are there, which are quite interesting and one should know.
The social pest, ant has been considered as a teaching to the world as they define what is living together as a group means.

They live in big colonies, and every ant has its own work assigned. The colony or the ant clan consists of queen, soldiers, the female workers and some other males. The main duty of the queen is to lay eggs, and the duty of males except the warriors is to mate with the queen. The soldiers protect the whole clan.

  • More than 12000 species of ants are found in the world.
  • An ant can carry 20 times more than its own weight.
  • Some of the queen ants may live for years and give birth to millions of ants. The average life span of an ant is 65 days.
  • Ears are absent in ant’s ant’s body. They hear through the vibrations made by their feet on the ground.
  • The fight among the ants or other pests of same type is usually very serious. It’s either they win the battle or die.
  • A special smell, i.e., the pheromone is left behind by the ant when it goes for forging which would help it as well as other ants to find out the place and the way.
  • The queen ant has wings which it shed at the time of making a new nest or colony.
  • No lungs are also present in ants. The respiration process occurs in them through the tiny pores on their bodies. The oxygen enters, and the carbon dioxide releases through these pore.
  • Being the only reproductive member of the colony the queen holds a special place. If it dies, no other ant can replace it, and therefore, the whole group dies within a few days.
  • The credit of having the largest brain among the insects goes to ants. They have around 250000 brain cells. An average human has 50 – 100 million of them.
  • Ants can be found in every continent except Antarctica as the climate and temperature there, is not favorable for the ants.
  • The ants are also mentioned in the holy Bible, as the lord Jesus gave their reference as how they moved in a group and how hard working, they are.
  • At night, the worker ants take the eggs and pupae to lower level of the soil so as to protect them from enemies and cold weather.
  • The total weight of ants around the globe is more than the total weight of all the human beings.
  • An ant uses its antennae for touching and smelling.
  • An ant’s body has two stomachs one stores food for itself, and the other one is for storing food for others.
  • The slave maker ant is so named because it raids other ant’s nests and steals their pupae and when they hatch the products are treated as slaves.
  • The queen ant hatches and feeds the egg with its own saliva.
